One of the most sought after contemporary dance artiste in UKs dance scene; a performer who does more than a 100 shows every year has one very surprising character hes shy! Ive always been very shy, says Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter, who has been in the world of dancing for over a decade.
And this artiste is all geared up to perform in Hyderabad, rather in India, for the first time today at Shilpa Kala Vedika! I had visited India for the first time a few months ago, with my brother. We had gone to Mumbai for some official work.
Though this is just my second visit, Im excited because well be performing for the first time in India, says the dancer, who adds that hes Glad we started with Hyderabad, the city of culture and food, had heard so much about from so many people.
Since I landed a couple of days earlier, I got a chance to explore Old city. Im a big foodie, so it was a complete treat for me. I gorged on the biryani! The troupes style of dancing is contemporary, with a touch of Israeli folk dance. A lot of groups do contemporary dance, but that has a lot of pretense. We make our dance look real, and the story portrayed is direct and
simple, explains Hofesh. I encourage my dancers to be theatrical, have a lot of raw, physical energy so that the audience connects with us. I want the audience to feel our performance and emotions, adds the dancer.
And their acts are not mere entertainment pieces of work they reflect real-life issues. We depict real life stories and facts of the world through our dance, and mostly, the subject is power. So, it can be power of a politician, a leader, a rockstar anybody who has influence over people. In the act, we will be presenting today, titled Political Mother, we portray a politician whos a ruler and keeps murmuring all the time. Basically, Im interested in human behaviour.
But this passionate artiste didnt start off as a dancer the unconventionally goodlooking choreographer learnt piano at the age of six, post which he became a drummer in a band in London. But boredom forced him to shift to something that makes him feel alive. I continued playing the piano for seven years, but gradually, I got bored of practicing every day and later I felt, okay, Im done with piano. At the same time, I started discovering Israeli folk dance and got hooked onto it so much, that dance became my passion.
Eventually, I became a professional and started choreographing acts, more of theatrical dance. I am 39 now and its been more than 13 years that Ive have been into dancing. Today, I have my own dance company with 16 members. And choreographing 16 members for every act they do isnt a cake walk! Ive been choreographing for 10 years now and trust me, its a big challenge! Though my troupe members ideate and help in making decisions, but ultimately, I have to make the final call.
Creating new ideas and stories for every act and then setting the dance and teaching everybody its difficult to decide everything alone. Hofesh however, is quote smitten by Bollywood films, and wishes to choreograph for it! In my first visit to India in Mumbai, I watched Shaadi ke Side Effects and liked the film a lot. So, I would really want to choreograph for Bollywood films, if I get a chance, he signs off.
